Medical certificate, sick note or sick certificate?
If you've searched for a medical certificate online, you've probably also seen the same kind of documentation called a sick note, a sick certificate or a doctor's certificate. These terms are generally used to describe evidence of an absence from work due to illness, injury or caring responsibilities, though the exact meaning can vary depending on the context.
At Sicknotes, we call ours an Absence from Work Certificate. It's issued only where an AHPRA-Registered Pharmacist reviews your request and determines that a certificate is appropriate. Whether you're searching for a sick note online, a sick certificate or a medical certificate for work, Sicknotes provides an online way to request one for eligible personal or carer's leave circumstances.
What you can request
Sicknotes provides an Absence from Work Certificate for eligible requests involving personal leave and carer's leave. Your certificate starts on the day of your consultation and can cover up to two days of absence.
Every request is reviewed by an AHPRA-Registered Pharmacist. Your certificate includes the reviewing pharmacist's name, qualifications and AHPRA registration details. It does not display Sicknotes branding.
Not every request results in a certificate. Each one is individually reviewed, and if a certificate can't be issued, you'll receive a full refund. No certificate, no charge.

Who might need a medical certificate online?
People request this kind of documentation from a wide range of workplaces. Office workers managing a busy inbox, retail and hospitality staff covering rostered shifts, teachers running a classroom, and healthcare, childcare, aged care and trade professionals in physically demanding roles can all need evidence of an absence from time to time.
If you'd like guidance specific to your profession, see our pages for office workers, retail workers, hospitality workers, teachers, healthcare workers, childcare workers, aged care workers and tradies.
What employers can ask for
Under the Fair Work Act, employers can ask employees to provide reasonable evidence to support a claim for personal or carer's leave, and a medical certificate is one example of that evidence, although individual employers, awards and agreements can have their own requirements. If you're unsure what your employer requires, check your workplace policy before submitting your certificate.
For more detail on what's covered, see our guides to personal leave and carer's leave, or the Fair Work Ombudsman's guidance on sick and carer's leave.
When an online request may not be appropriate
This isn't a substitute for medical care. If your symptoms are severe, persist or worsen, or you need diagnosis, treatment or ongoing care, please see your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.
In an emergency, call 000 or attend the nearest emergency department.
